Children are not always able to effectively communicate their needs and often do not have the cognitive or language abilities to effectively communicate their emotional experiences, and will instead express themselves through play. Play therapy is an effective therapeutic tool that provides an opportunity for children to communicate their needs, emotions, feelings and behaviour. It is through play that a healing process can be created.
My approach to play therapy is child-centred, which creates an environment to help children communicate their experiences in a nondirective way. Using therapeutic toys and play materials allows a child to feel comfortable to express themselves, in a non-threatening environment.
